To reach these exclusive island retreats, you paddle the gentle lake in stable double kayaks (or take a boat ride). Both Mumbo Island & Domwe Island lie within the Lake Malawi National Park and Kayak Africa has exclusive use of them.
Amongst the rocks overlooking unbelievable clear azure water, they have built wooden thatched-roof platforms concealing the canvas walls of safari tents. This is your home while on the island and each one has its own balcony with large inviting hammock. Each island has a central 'chill out' area where you find more hammocks, African table games and the bar and dining table.
Superb meals are deliciously presented, with an array of fresh ingredients such as fish caught from the lake or salads and vegetables brought by boat from the mainland. On your Malawi safari your day consists of deciding whether to snorkel, dive, swim, kayak or just laze in your hammock while listening to the distinctive cry of the Fish Eagle.
This is very close to paradise on earth. Sub-aqua life amongst the shallow rocks around the islands is nothing short of astounding. It is like snorkelling in an aquarium. Many of the little chichlid fish shine like polished silver as the sun refracts in the water, but there are hundreds of others such as Cobalt Zebras and Mumbo Yellow (only found around Mumbo island).
