Beyond the Baobab Plains, at the Southern tip of the island, lies a crescent shaped beach of fine golden sand surrounded by Mango trees. This is Kaya Mawa lodge.

  • Kaya Mawa Lodge was built by hand
  • Experience a combination of luxury and simplicity
  • Likoma Island can be reached by charter
  • Kaya Mawa's philosophy epitomises 'eco-friendly' tourism

Translated from Chinyanja, the local dialect, Kaya Mawa means 'maybe tomorrow'. Providing secluded luxury in traditional surroundings, Kaya Mawa is the ultimate Malawi safari destination for the discerning traveller. It is perhaps one of the last 'undiscovered' islands of Africa. Built by hand, in partnership with the local community, the lodge imaginatively incorporates luxury and simplicity without intruding on the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Malawi International Airport is situated in the capital, Lilongwe. Privately chartered flights run directly to Likoma Island from here, a journey of just 50 minutes. Malawi International also serves Mfuwe in the impressive South Luangwa National Park, bringing these prestigious game reserves within an hours' easy flying time. Malawi, formerly Nyasaland, is one of the least known countries in Central, Southern Africa.

Bordering Mozambique to the West, Zambia to the South and Tanzania to the North, Malawi is known locally as 'The Warm Heart of Africa'. The country is dominated by its lake. Its huge dimensions (365 miles by 52 miles, and up to 800m deep) give it the incredible appeareance of a freshwater, inland sea. Its shoreline includes beautiful, untouched beaches and its crystal clear waters provide for an abundance of wildlife including over 800 species of tropical freshwater fish, turtles, otters and varied birdlife.

One of the most isolated and beautiful destinations in Malawi is Likoma Island, the larger of two islands in the northern region of the lake. With breathtaking views of the mountains and wilderness of Mozambique, Likoma remains almost untouched since its discovery by Scottish missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century.
